Senior Platform Engineer / Windows Administrator

We are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer with Windows Server as the primary focus, to join our mission critical Platform team team at Bohemia Interactive Simulations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Windows system administration and automation, ideally in a regulated, mixed Windows / Linux hybrid cloud environment. You will be responsible for maintaining stable, compliant and fully automated Windows Server builds on our VMware virtualisation platform and you will have the opportunity to work on tech that is looked after by the Platform team including AWS and Kubernetes.
This role is critical in supporting the growth of our company while ensuring a continuous compliance, minimising risk while delivering a seamless developer experience and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Administer and maintain Windows Server environments within a VMware vSphere infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance and reliability across regions.
- Manage VMware vSphere infrastructure, including deployment, upgrades, and troubleshooting of virtual machines, clusters, and storage.
- Establish and enforce baseline configurations for Windows Server environments, ensuring consistency, security, and compliance.
- Enhance automation processes for server provisioning, configuration management, and system updates using tools like PowerShell, Ansible, and other automation frameworks.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to Windows Servers in a virtualized environment, ensuring minimal downtime and disruption.
- Implement and manage backup and recovery processes for Windows Servers using Veeam Backup & Replication, ensuring business continuity and disaster recovery readiness.
- Work collaboratively with the team to improve system reliability through proactive monitoring, capacity planning, and performance analysis.
- Maintain system security by applying patches, updates, and necessary hardening procedures.
- Develop and maintain documentation related to system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
Objectives:
- Ensure our Microsoft Server environment integrates with Azure Entra ID
- Own the lifecycle for our Windows Server estate, managing build, release, management and retirement
- Enable the continued compliance of our Windows environments, against frameworks such as NIST 800-171 and CMMC Level 2
- Focus on automation where possible, to avoid human error and reduce workload on the team
Skills:
- Strong experience with Windows Server administration, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy
- Expertise in managing and supporting VMware vSphere environments, including ESXi, vCenter, and virtual machine lifecycle management.
- Experience with Ansible for configuration management and automation.
- Experience with system monitoring tools and performance tuning in a Windows Server and VMware environment.
- Solid understanding of network protocols, storage technologies, and backup methodologies.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve complex system issues promptly.
- Experience with server and storage hardware, particularly Dell PowerEdge servers and Dell PowerStore storage systems.
- Knowledge of PowerShell scripting for automation and system administration tasks.
- Familiarity with Git for version control and collaborative development.
- Experience working in a Hybrid environment with on-premise alongside Azure
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
- 5+ years of experience in managing a Windows Server environment on a larger scale, preferably in a regulated industry
Nice to have:
- Knowledge and hands-on experience with Veeam Backup & Replication solutions.
- Experience with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code deployments and management.
- Linux experience, particularly with RHEL-based distributions such as Rocky Linux, for managing hybrid or multi-OS environments.
- Experience with Kubernetes, especially running Windows workloads
- Programming / software development experience
- Experience working in a highly regulated environment
- Occasional travel may be required. Not essential.
